RRI.CO.ID, George Town - In the heart of George Town, Malaysia, stands a historic street named Lebuh Aceh, which bears witness to the traces of the Acehnese community in the land of the diaspora. The road, located in the core zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds stories of how Acehnese traders built a new life in the Malay Peninsula more than two centuries ago.
The history of this area began in 1792 when Tengku Syed Hussain Al-Idid, a nobleman from Aceh of Arab descent from Hadramaut, Yemen, arrived in Penang and settled there. He then grew into a successful merchant shortly after Captain Francis Light opened Penang as a trading port in the late 18th century.
With his wealth, Tengku Syed Hussain Al-Idid built a complete complex consisting of a mosque, a tower, residential houses, a row of shophouses, a Quran school, and business offices. This complex, covering an area of approximately 66,000 square feet, is now known as the Lebuh Aceh enclave, with the mosque as its main landmark.
This area is strategically located in the heart of George Town, directly opposite the Khoo Kong Si Temple enclave, one of the most famous Chinese clan complexes in Malaysia. Its proximity makes Lebuh Aceh a tangible example of the cultural diversity that once coexisted in that port city.
The glory of the Aceh community in Penang did not cease after Tengku Syed Hussain Al-Idid passed away in the mid-19th century. This settlement continued to thrive and reached its peak of prosperity until the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
One of the descendants of this community is Teuku Nyak Putih, the father of the legendary Malay artist, P. Ramlee. This fact shows how the Acehnese presence in Penang has also colored the history of Malaysia's popular culture for generations to come.
Now, the road known as Acheh Street connects Carnarvon Street to Beach Street and intersects with Armenian Street and Cannon Street, remaining a part of the core zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town. The architecture of the mosque, which has been preserved to this day, stands as a living testament to the heritage of the Acehnese traders who once built their glory in foreign lands.
