RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesian Foreign Minister, Sugiono has said that the government plans to evacuate 15 Indonesian citizens in Tehran, Iran. He made the statement during a doorstop interview at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
He said this step was taken after they submitted an official request for repatriation to the Indonesian government. The Foreign Minister explained that the evacuation process would be carried out by land to Baku, Azerbaijan, because Iranian airspace is currently still closed.
The government is currently finalizing logistical preparations and ensuring their health conditions, considering that the road trip will take around 10 hours. “It takes 10 hours to travel from Tehran to Baku. We need to calculate the logistics first, then consider whether the people are healthy enough, and so on. So, we can't just decide to evacuate today and do it right away,” he said.
He also added that none of the Indonesian citizens in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain have submitted evacuation requests yet.
Sugiono said, “In Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain, no one has requested evacuation. Only 15 Indonesian citizens in Iran have made the request.”
On the same day, the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran officially announced the start of a phased evacuation process for all Indonesian citizens in Iran. This decision was made in response to the latest developments in the region to ensure the safety and protection of Indonesian citizens.
This announcement was made on the official Instagram account @indonesiaintehran on March 4, 2026. All Indonesian citizens residing or currently in Iran are requested to immediately contact the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran for technical coordination. This step is crucial for determining departure schedules and evacuation meeting points for each wave of repatriation.
Although the evacuation process has been decided, the embassy assures that the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran will continue to operate normally. Consular services and protection for Indonesian citizens within the embassy's jurisdiction remain in place as usual.
