RRI.CO.ID, Depok - Universitas Indonesia (UI) officially hosted Mexican Ambassador Francisco “Paco” de la Torre Galindo at its campus on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

The meeting took place in Depok, West Java, as a proactive move to explore comprehensive cooperation opportunities with leading Mexican higher education institutions. By facilitating direct dialogue with UI’s Deputy Rector Mahmud Sudibandriyo, the visit aimed to strengthen global engagement and establish impactful academic collaborations between Indonesia and Mexico.

“We welcome this cooperation with Mexico. UI is committed to continuously expanding collaborations to develop educational quality with international partners and increasing global engagement to establish excellent and impactful cooperation for Indonesia and the world community,” he stated, as quoted by Antara. Ambassador Francisco de la Torre Galindo noted that cooperation between the two nations will build a further "bridge" toward broader educational collaboration.

The Ambassador's visit specifically aimed to bridge existing gaps and strengthen bilateral relations through the education sector. In his presentation to the UI delegation, he highlighted the significant interest from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Mexico’s largest and most prominent public university, in forming a strategic partnership with UI.

This interest is channeled through UNAM's specialized research unit known as PUEAAO, or El Programa Universitario de Estudios sobre Asia, África, y Oceanía. Because PUEAAO focuses on in-depth studies of Asia, Africa, and Oceania, it serves as a highly relevant and potential partner for UI, which also maintains a strong focus on regional studies.

Ambassador Torre proactively opened opportunities for communication and collaboration not only with the main campus but also with UNAM's branch strategically located in Beijing, China. This offer indicates a broader dimension of cooperation, leveraging UNAM's global position to provide UI access to an academic network extending into East Asia.

Beyond UNAM, the Ambassador introduced two other potential Mexican institutions for collaboration: El Colegio de México (ColMex) and Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL). Both universities share a similar focus, as each has established research centers oriented toward the Asia-Africa regions, demonstrating a high potential for synergy in research and knowledge development. ***
