RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Black tea (Camellia sinensis) is one of the world’s most consumed beverages and differs from green tea through its fermentation process, which transforms catechins into theaflavins and thearubigins. These polyphenolic compounds contribute to black tea’s color, flavor, and biological properties.
According to research published in the journal Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, black tea contains polyphenols that have been investigated for cardiovascular, antioxidant, and metabolic effects. The fermentation process creates unique compounds not found at the same levels in green tea.
One of the strongest research areas involving black tea is cardiovascular health. Several studies have explored the relationship between tea consumption and vascular function, suggesting that tea polyphenols may support healthy blood vessel activity.
Black tea has also gained attention in gut health research. Tea polyphenols can interact with intestinal microorganisms, potentially influencing the composition and activity of gut microbiota.
Beyond beverages, black tea extracts are used in cosmetic research because of their polyphenol content. These compounds are investigated for their ability to protect skin cells from environmental oxidative stress.
Although black tea is widely consumed safely, excessive intake may lead to high caffeine exposure. Individuals sensitive to caffeine or those with certain health conditions should adjust their intake accordingly.
