RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Gynura (Gynura procumbens), known in Indonesia as daun dewa, is a traditional medicinal plant that has gained attention due to its potential role in metabolic and cardiovascular health. Often consumed as a herbal vegetable, this plant contains flavonoids, phenolic compounds, saponins, and chlorogenic acid derivatives that have been investigated for their biological activities.

According to research published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Gynura procumbens contains phytochemicals associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and metabolic regulatory effects. Researchers have examined these compounds to understand the mechanisms behind its traditional use.

One of the most studied areas of daun dewa is its potential influence on blood sugar regulation. Experimental studies suggest that extracts from Gynura procumbens may affect glucose metabolism and insulin-related pathways, although clinical evidence in humans remains limited.

The plant has also attracted attention in cardiovascular research. Some studies have investigated its potential effects on lipid metabolism and vascular protection, particularly due to its flavonoid content.

Beyond health applications, daun dewa is increasingly explored as a functional food ingredient. Its edible leaves and phytochemical profile provide opportunities for developing herbal beverages, supplements, and nutritional products.

Although traditionally consumed, concentrated extracts should be used carefully. More clinical research is needed to determine effective doses, safety limits, and potential interactions with medications.
