RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Soybean (Glycine max), referred to as kedelai in Indonesia, is one of the most important plant-based food sources and the foundation of many traditional foods such as tofu and tempeh. Beyond its nutritional value, soybean contains high-quality protein, isoflavones, lecithin, saponins, and essential fatty acids that have made it a major focus of health research.
According to a review published in the journal Nutrients, soybean isoflavones, particularly genistein and daidzein, are among the most studied plant compounds due to their phytoestrogen activity. These compounds can interact with estrogen receptors and have been investigated for their role in hormonal balance.
One of the strongest areas of soybean research is cardiovascular health. Studies have examined the relationship between soy protein consumption and cholesterol metabolism, suggesting that replacing certain animal proteins with soy protein may contribute to healthier lipid profiles.
Soybean is also widely studied in women’s health, especially regarding menopausal symptoms. Because isoflavones have estrogen-like activity, researchers have investigated their potential role in managing symptoms related to declining estrogen levels.
The cosmetic industry has shown interest in soybean-derived ingredients because of their protein, vitamin E, and isoflavone content. Soy extracts are incorporated in skincare products aimed at maintaining skin elasticity and supporting healthy aging.
Although soy foods are generally considered safe and nutritious, individuals with soy allergies should avoid consumption. People with hormone-sensitive medical conditions should consult healthcare professionals before using concentrated soy supplements.
