RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa), known in Indonesia as bunga rosella, has become one of the most popular herbal plants used in beverages and natural health products. The deep red calyx of roselle contains anthocyanins, flavonoids, organic acids, and phenolic compounds that contribute to its antioxidant properties and potential health benefits.

According to a review published in the journal Fitoterapia, roselle contains high levels of anthocyanins, particularly delphinidin and cyanidin derivatives, which are responsible for its red color and antioxidant activity.

These compounds help neutralize free radicals and protect cells from oxidative stress.

One of the most widely studied benefits of roselle is its potential role in cardiovascular health. Several clinical studies have investigated roselle tea consumption and its relationship with blood pressure regulation, suggesting that bioactive compounds may influence vascular function.

Roselle also has potential applications in metabolic health research. Studies have examined its effects on lipid profiles and antioxidant defense systems, although the results depend on dosage, preparation method, and individual conditions.

In the food and cosmetic industries, roselle is valued as a natural source of color and antioxidants. Anthocyanin-rich extracts are increasingly explored for functional beverages, natural coloring agents, and skincare formulations designed to protect skin from oxidative stress.

Although roselle tea is generally safe when consumed as a beverage, concentrated extracts may interact with certain medications. Individuals using blood pressure medication or other long-term treatments should consult healthcare professionals before regular supplementation.
