RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Bilimbi (Averrhoa bilimbi), locally known as belimbing wuluh, is a tropical Indonesian plant commonly used in traditional cooking and herbal preparations. Beyond its sour flavor and culinary function, this fruit contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, phenolic compounds, tannins, vitamin C, and organic acids that contribute to antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.
A study published in the journal Pharmacognosy Journal reported that Averrhoa bilimbi extracts contain phenolic and flavonoid compounds with significant antioxidant potential. These compounds work by neutralizing free radicals and reducing oxidative stress that may contribute to cellular damage.
One of the most studied properties of belimbing wuluh is its antimicrobial activity. Laboratory research has shown that extracts from the fruit and leaves may inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, supporting its traditional use in food preservation and herbal preparations.
The high vitamin C and antioxidant content of belimbing wuluh has also attracted attention in functional food development. Plant-based antioxidants from tropical fruits are increasingly investigated as natural alternatives for supporting dietary health and protecting cells from oxidative damage.

In cosmetic research, belimbing wuluh extracts are being explored because of their antioxidant potential. Natural fruit extracts containing phenolic compounds may support skin protection by reducing oxidative stress caused by environmental factors.
Although belimbing wuluh is commonly consumed as food, excessive intake of acidic fruit preparations should be considered carefully, especially for individuals with sensitive digestive systems. More clinical studies are needed to determine specific therapeutic applications.
