BRIN Promotes Neuroscience Research Aligned with Clinical Needs

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is encouraging the development of neuroscience research that is more closely aligned with clinical needs. This initiative aims to accelerate innovation in the management of various neurological diseases that have long posed public health challenges.

This push emerged during a scientific discussion forum titled "Current Research, Clinical Innovation, and Future Perspectives," organized by the Biomedical Research Center under BRIN’s Health Research Organization. The forum brought together researchers to discuss the latest developments in neurology research and opportunities for their clinical application.

Neurological diseases are recognized as an increasingly urgent global health challenge, driven by population growth and rising life expectancy. This situation creates a need for research that goes beyond mere scientific discovery to deliver tangible solutions for patients and the broader community.

The forum also aimed to bridge basic research perspectives with clinical innovation, fostering collaboration among academics, clinicians, researchers, and the younger generation. Such cross-disciplinary synergy is considered vital for accelerating the translation of research findings into practical healthcare applications.

One of the topics discussed was the use of cerebral dopamine neurotrophic factor (CDNF) to enhance the ability of microglia to clear hematomas and alleviate neuroinflammation following intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). This approach is projected to reduce the risk of secondary brain injury and promote the recovery of neurological function after a hemorrhage.

Another topic highlighted the mechanism of protein misfolding in prions, which are normal proteins in the body that can change into abnormal structures and trigger other proteins to undergo similar changes, forming a series of pathological processes in the brain. The study revealed that specific residue regions play a crucial role in the conversion process across various prion strains, although the function of these regions differs between strains.

This finding remains at the discovery stage and has not yet become a therapeutic treatment, as further development requires validation, intervention design, and both preclinical and clinical testing.

Through this forum, BRIN reaffirms its commitment to fostering neuroscience research that not only deepens the understanding of disease mechanisms but also opens up opportunities for clinical application. The development of biomarkers and neurorestorative therapies, alongside the utilization of artificial intelligence, machine learning, neuroimaging, and precision medicine, are identified as key areas with significant potential to drive the emergence of research-based healthcare services in the future.
