RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin has urged residents in areas affected by Mount Anak Krakatau's volcanic ash to limit their outdoor activities immediately. This warning follows ongoing eruptions from the volcano, which has been at Alert Level III since Friday, September 4, 2026.
Wind has carried fine ash particles across Banten, Jakarta, and West Java. This exposure poses a risk of acute health issues, including acute respiratory infections, eye irritation, and skin problems.
Children, the elderly, and people with existing heart or lung conditions are the most vulnerable to these hazards. To reduce health risks, the public is asked to stay indoors unless they have urgent business outside.
"If you do not have urgent activities, try to stay inside the house. However, if you must go out, make sure to always wear a mask and eye protection," Budi said during an online press conference on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
He added that residents should wash their bodies and clothing immediately after returning indoors because volcanic ash particles are very sharp. Additionally, people should not rub their eyes if dust gets in, but should instead rinse them with clean water.
“If dust gets into your eyes, do not rub them. Clean them with water and use eye drops if necessary. We have prepared all community health centers to handle these conditions,” Budi emphasized.
As a quick response, the Ministry of Health has placed community health centers and hospitals on 24-hour alert while delivering medical supplies like masks and oxygen. Minister Budi also asked the public to stay calm and visit the nearest health facility if they experience any medical problems.
