RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Flower tea is a popular herbal beverage choice that promotes relaxation while providing the body with antioxidants. It is made by steeping various edible flowers and is generally caffeine-free.
Popular varieties include butterfly pea, chamomile, chrysanthemum, rose, and jasmine teas. Each possesses unique flavor profiles, aromas, and compositions, offering a range of health benefits.
According to the Indonesian Journal of Biomedical Science (2023), butterfly pea tea is known for its natural blue hue and high anthocyanin content. Anthocyanins are antioxidants that help protect the body's cells from free radical damage. Butterfly pea tea is also associated with benefits such as helping to maintain blood sugar levels and providing a calming effect.
Meanwhile, chamomile tea is renowned for its soothing properties and is often consumed before bedtime. It helps relax both body and mind while supporting sleep quality. Chrysanthemum and rose teas also contain antioxidants and are traditionally used to alleviate stress, offering a relaxing effect through their floral aromas.
Jasmine tea is also widely consumed to promote relaxation and boost mood. The distinctive aroma of jasmine flowers is believed to have a calming effect and help reduce anxiety. It is often blended with green or black tea to create a more complex flavor profile.
To prepare flower tea, steep dried flowers in hot water (approximately 90 to 100 degrees Celsius) for five to ten minutes. Once the color and aroma have infused, strain the tea and add honey or lemon to taste; it can be enjoyed either warm or cold.
To maintain quality, dried tea flowers should be stored in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight. The flowers also need to be stored in an airtight container to prevent moisture from compromising their quality, allowing them to be used for several months.
