Indonesia and France Reinforce Coastal Ecosystem Protection

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indoneisa's Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN/Bappenas) launched the Blue Carbon Ecosystem Protection and Management Roadmap 2026–2045 at the Bappenas Building in Jakarta on Monday, September 21, 2026. This roadmap serves as a cross-sector reference to sustainably strengthen the protection and management of coastal ecosystems toward Golden Indonesia 2045.

This strategic document was formulated by the Ministry of PPN/Bappenas alongside the Indonesia Climate Change Trust Fund (ICCTF), with funding support from the Agence Française de Development (AFD), and implemented by the World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia. Minister of PPN/Head of Bappenas Rachmat Pambudy emphasized the importance of mainstreaming blue carbon to maintain a balance between economic growth, environmental carrying capacity, and ecosystem sustainability.

"Through the launch of the Blue Carbon Ecosystem Protection and Management Roadmap 2026–2045, Indonesia is officially transforming its climate strategy from a land-based approach to a holistic land-and-ocean strategy," Rachmat stated.

The roadmap carries the vision of "Indonesia's blue carbon ecosystems protected and optimally managed as a tangible contribution to environmental preservation, global climate resilience, and the welfare of coastal communities." This vision is translated through three main achievements, Nature, Climate, and People, supported by five core pillars: policy, regulation, and planning; institutions; data and science; financing; and community empowerment.

The implementation of the roadmap will be carried out in stages up to 2045. It starts from foundational strengthening and implementation acceleration to ensuring long-term sustainability to achieve environmental preservation and improve the welfare of Indonesia's coastal communities.

AFD Deputy Country Director in Indonesia Caroline Edant stated that AFD has supported the ICCTF since 2022 in drafting this strategic roadmap. France is committed to cooperating with the Indonesian Government to turn this roadmap into concrete action in the coming years.

The implementation of the 2026–2045 Blue Carbon Ecosystem Roadmap is expected to strengthen cooperation, funding, and scientific knowledge. The goal is to preserve coastal ecosystems in order to realize “Golden Indonesia 2045.”
