RRI.CO.ID, Jambi City - Authorities rescued 36 rare and protected birds, including the Sumatran Leafbird (Chloropsis media) and Yellow-headed Leafbird (Chloropsis flavocincta) in an illegal wildlife trade operation. The protected species were seized alongside hundreds of other birds as they were being smuggled out of the Kerinci region toward Muaro Jambi Regency, Jambi Province.

“Hundreds of birds were being transported in a travel vehicle from Kerinci. We set up an interception in Jambi Luar Kota Subdistrict, Muaro Jambi Regency,” said Head of the Forest Police Unit at Jambi’s Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), Jefrianto, in Jambi City on Monday, September 7, 2026.

As reported by Antara, officials secured a total of 198 birds. Of these, 36 were protected species, such as the Yellow-headed Leafbird, Sumatran Leafbird, Blue-winged Leafbird (Chloropsis moluccensis), and Mini Leafbird (Chloropsis cyanopogon).

In addition to the protected birds, officers confiscated 162 non-protected birds. The majority comprised 100 Orange-bellied White-eyes (Zosterops spp) or locally known as Pleci and 35 Javan Mynas (Acridotheres javanicus), with the remainder consisting of various other songbird species.

Jefrianto explained that the hundred-plus birds, transported without accompanying documentation, were shipped from Kerinci Regency to Muaro Jambi Regency via a travel vehicle on Monday, August 31, 2026.

Acting on this information, a joint team from Protecting Indonesia’s Birds (Flight), an organization focused on wild bird protection and curbing illegal wildlife trade, and the BKSDA Region II conservation unit carried out an interception on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at 4 a.m. Jakarta time. The operation took place in the Ness area, specifically at the exit gate of a housing complex in Jambi Luar Kota Subdistrict. ***
