World Lake Day 2026: Protect Lakes, Save Future Generations

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – World Lake Day is commemorated every August 27 as a global momentum to raise awareness of the importance of lake ecosystems to human life. The observance was established through the 79th United Nations General Assembly on December 12, 2024, under UN Resolution A/79/L.39.

In 2026, World Lake Day carries the theme “Healthy Lakes, Saving Generation,” emphasizing the importance of maintaining healthy lake ecosystems to support the well-being of future generations. In Indonesia, the Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) is encouraging communities and stakeholders to mark the occasion through concrete actions.

The call is outlined in Minister of Environment/Head of BPLH Circular Letter Number 15 of 2026 on the Commemoration of World Lake Day 2026, issued in Jakarta on August 5, 2026. The circular calls on local governments, businesses, and environmental communities to take part in protecting and sustainably managing lake ecosystems.

Indonesia is home to more than 2,000 lakes containing at least 500 cubic kilometers of water, equivalent to around 72 percent of the country's surface water. Lakes play an important role in providing freshwater, maintaining biodiversity, supporting food security, and sustaining communities living around them.

However, Indonesia's lake ecosystems face various pressures, ranging from pollution and declining water quality to eutrophication, land-use changes in lake catchment areas and buffer zones, and biodiversity loss. These challenges highlight the need for sustainable efforts to protect and manage lake ecosystems.

Through World Lake Day 2026, KLH/BPLH is encouraging various actions, including lake clean-up activities, planting around lakes and their catchment areas, public education and campaigns, as well as strengthening regulations and community institutions concerned with lake conservation. These efforts are expected to increase public participation while strengthening collaboration to preserve lake ecosystems.

Protecting lakes requires the involvement of various stakeholders, including the government, businesses, communities, educational institutions, the media, and the public. Through collaboration and concrete action, World Lake Day 2026 is expected to serve as a momentum to keep Indonesia's lakes healthy and ensure their benefits can be enjoyed by future generations.
