World Bank Funds 6,486-Hectare Mangrove Restoration in East Kalimantan

RRI.CO.ID, Samarinda - A major effort to protect East Kalimantan’s coastal areas from the threats of abrasion and the climate crisis has officially begun. Through the World Bank-supported Mangroves for Coastal Resilience (M4CR) Programme, the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry is targeting the restoration of 6,486 hectares of mangrove ecosystems to ensure that East Kalimantan’s natural coastal defences are preserved for the future.
“The World Bank-funded mangrove planting is being carried out by the Directorate of Watershed Management and Forest Rehabilitation through the M4CR programme,” said Assistant for the Independent Mangrove-Care Village programme (DMPM), Irwan Gunawan, representing M4CR East Kalimantan, in Samarinda on Saturday, 29 August 2026.
He explained that 38 community groups are targeted to rehabilitate 6,486 hectares of mangrove land this year. Of that total, two community groups have begun planting across 151 hectares after signing cooperation agreements (SPKS).
Meanwhile, 24 other community groups remain in the rehabilitation preparation stage after signing SPKS agreements with M4CR on Thursday, 27 August 2026. Under the agreements, they are formally responsible for completing mangrove planting across 1,276 hectares.
As reported by Antara, the remaining 12 community groups are still awaiting the signing process before undertaking rehabilitation work on thousands of hectares of mangrove land across East Kalimantan.
Irwan said the 24 community groups that had recently signed the agreements came from three subdistricts in Kutai Kartanegara Regency. The agreements signed were Type IV Self-Managed SPKS agreements, specifically for the mangrove-planting programme.
He added that the SPKS constitutes an important stage in beginning the implementation of planting activities that had previously been planned as part of M4CR East Kalimantan’s 2026 mangrove rehabilitation targets.
All community groups that have signed the agreements have 90 days to complete the planting work. The period is calculated from the date the documents are agreed upon by the community groups and the Commitment-Making Officer (PPK) for the M4CR East Kalimantan project.
“Before the SPKS agreements were signed, price and work negotiations were conducted first. The negotiations were carried out by Commitment-Making Officer III for the East Kalimantan region,” he said.
In addition to signing the SPKS agreements, all community groups received briefings from law-enforcement officials. The materials covered mechanisms for managing Type IV self-managed grant funds, as well as legal aspects intended to prevent potential criminal offences. ***
