Seribu Islands Plants 10,684 Coral Seedlings to Restore Jakarta Seas

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Efforts to restore Jakarta's coastal ecosystems are being accelerated to safeguard the natural defenses and marine biodiversity of the Seribu Islands. Throughout 2026, a total of 10,684 coral seedlings were planted to rehabilitate damaged reefs and strengthen the marine environment's resilience against the threat of degradation.
Head of the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) for the Marine Cultivation and Conservation Center (PBKL) under Jakarta’s Food Security, Maritime Affairs and Agriculture Agency (KPKP), Andi Dala Jemma, said the coral fragments had been distributed for planting. The transplantation program is focused on Community-Based Marine Protected Areas (DPL-BM) on Tidung, Pari, Payung and Lancang Islands.
He said coral transplantation activities have been carried out since early 2026, with a total of 10,684 coral fragments planted across the four islands. The distribution includes 4,000 fragments on Tidung Island, 3,484 on Payung Island, and 1,600 each on Pari and Lancang islands.
Andi explained that this year’s coral transplantation program has been expanded to four islands. Previously, similar activities had focused only on Tidung Island.
As reported by Antara, the initiative is part of the Jakarta Provincial Administration commitment to preserving marine ecosystems while strengthening environmental and economic benefits for coastal communities.
According to Andi, coral reefs play a vital role in supporting underwater life and sustaining the livelihoods of coastal residents. Coral reef restoration is expected to provide significant ecological benefits, including protecting biodiversity, increasing fisheries productivity and enhancing the appeal of Jakarta’s marine tourism sector.
“This is an environmental investment. With healthy coral reefs, marine ecosystems will be preserved, ultimately having a positive impact on the economic welfare of fishers and tourism operators,” he said in Jakarta on Tuesday, August 26, 2026.
Meanwhile, Head of the Karang Mutiara Community-Based Marine Protected Area Group on Lancang Island, Damiyati, welcomed the assistance provided by the Jakarta Provincial Administration. The group received 400 substrates and 1,600 coral fragments to support transplantation efforts in its area.
According to Damiyati, the assistance has been highly beneficial to the restoration of the underwater ecosystem around Lancang Island. “We are committed to protecting these coral fragments so they can grow properly,” she said. ***
