RRI.CO.ID, Kebumen - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) develops technology to map underground river flows as part of efforts to strengthen national water security. This research is being conducted in the karst area of Kebumen, Central Java, and is a follow-up to the President of the Republic of Indonesia's focus on the development of clean water technology.

In a statement received on Monday, August 3, 2026, Head of BRIN, Arif Satria, personally inspected one of the underground water sources that has long been a mainstay for local residents. This visit aimed to identify research potential and ensure the water source can be utilized sustainably.

According to him, the current research priority is understanding the characteristics and flow paths of underground rivers as a basis for developing water security technology. This mapping is crucial for managing underground water resources more measurably and efficiently.

In addition to mapping water flows, BRIN is also developing technology to improve the water quality of these underground sources. This step was taken after the discovery of high levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria in the underground river water in the area.

Arif further explained that proper water treatment technology is needed to ensure that water from these sources is safe for public consumption. Without adequate treatment, the presence of harmful bacteria risks causing health problems for residents who depend on these water sources.

During the same visit, Arif also visited the National Agency for Research and Innovation (BRIN)'s geological scientific collection center in the same area to engage in dialogue with researchers. This meeting was used to formulate BRIN's future strategic research direction, particularly in the fields of geology and water technology.

Previously, on July 28, 2026, BRIN presented 13 water resilience technologies to President Prabowo Subianto during a limited meeting at the State Palace. The President reportedly expressed interest in these technologies as part of the national strategy to address extreme weather and the water crisis.
