RRI.CO.ID, Bandung – Construction of the Legok Nangka Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Plant in the Greater Bandung area has officially entered the groundbreaking phase. This WTE Plant project involves Japanese and Dutch investors and utilizes advanced technology that will process more than 2,000 metric tons of waste per day and generate 40.79 megawatts of electricity.

The waste problem in the Greater Bandung area will no longer end at final disposal sites but will instead be converted into 40.79 megawatts of electricity. This concrete step was marked by the groundbreaking ceremony for the Legok Nangka WTE Plant in Bandung, West Java, on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

In his remarks, Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Yuliot Tanjung, emphasized that the government aims to implement WTE as a comprehensive solution to urban waste problems by 2029. Specifically, Yuliot provided details on the capacity and investment value of the Legok Nangka WTE Plant project.

Yuliot said, “The Legok Nangka WTE Plant is designed with a generating capacity of 40.79 megawatts, capable of processing approximately 2,000 metric tons of waste, and represents an investment of 400 million U.S. dollars, or approximately 7.2 trillion.”

Besides being capable of processing thousands of metric tons of waste per day, Yuliot added that the project is projected to create 1,500 jobs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 311,000 metric tons of CO2, and is slated to begin commercial operations by the end of 2029. On the same occasion, West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi stated that the Legok Nangka WTE Plant will bring three major benefits to the people of West Java, particularly the Greater Bandung area.

“We are blessed with three key factors that will begin today and yield results by 2029. The first factor is that the waste problem plaguing the City of Bandung, Bandung Regency, West Bandung Regency, and the City of Cimahi will soon be resolved,” Dedi said.

Furthermore, Dedi explained that this WTE Plant will also serve as a provider of clean energy in the form of electricity that can support industrial needs while fostering a healthier environment. The Legok Nangka WTE Plant project employs advanced waste-processing technology from Japan, equipped with a modern emission filtration system capable of trapping and breaking down hazardous gases such as dioxins as well as unpleasant odors.
