Indonesia Cracks Down on Illegal Gold Mining in North Sulawesi Forest

Through supervision and firm action, the Indonesian government seeks to prevent environmental damage and deter violators.

“Law enforcement is part of the Ministry of Forestry’s efforts to strengthen the protection of forest areas, forest sustainability, and Indonesia’s natural resources,” said Director General of Forestry Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Forestry, Dwi Januanto Nugroho, in a statement in Jakarta on Sunday, July 26, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

One recent measure was the cessation of illegal gold mining in the Mobungayom Limited Production Forest in Bolaang Mongondow Regency, North Sulawesi.

In July 2026, the Sulawesi Regional Forestry Law Enforcement Center conducted a joint operation, seizing an excavator used for mining and apprehending five individuals at the site. Following the investigation, two were named suspects. The operation was a follow-up to public reports of suspected illegal mining in forest areas.

“Law enforcement aims to stop ongoing violations and ensure that forest areas fulfill their ecological functions. It also provides a deterrent effect to prevent similar crimes from recurring,” Dwi said.

He added that collaboration between the government, law enforcement, and the community is essential to maintaining sustainable forests for current and future generations.

This enforcement action follows the directive of Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni to strengthen forest protection through prevention, monitoring, and prosecution of violations.

“As part of a joint effort to preserve forests and the sustainability of Indonesia’s natural resources, the Ministry of Forestry continues to encourage public participation in reporting suspected illegal activities,” Dwi said. ***
