RRI.CO.ID, Badung – A community-based coral reef restoration program across five regencies and cities in Bali has successfully created more than 10,000 local jobs while restoring marine ecosystems. The initiative, dubbed the Indonesia Coral Reef Garden (ICRG) and spearheaded by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, has effectively combined environmental protection with coastal economic recovery.

The involvement of thousands of local residents in this program has proven effective in restoring 72 hectares of marine ecosystems in the waters of the Island of the Gods. In addition to rehabilitating damaged coral reefs, the program has boosted the appeal of marine tourism and spurred the growth of marine resource-based businesses among local communities.

The Director General of Marine Management, Koswara, emphasized the importance of integration between environmental restoration and the economic empowerment of coastal residents. He noted that conservation efforts not only preserve marine ecosystems but also open up business opportunities and improve community well-being.

“Coral reef restoration, community-based marine tourism, and the development of value-added marine products must go hand in hand. In this way, conservation not only safeguards marine ecosystems but also creates business opportunities, jobs, and improves the well-being of coastal communities,” Koswara said in Jakarta on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, as quoted in an official press release from the ministry.

Political support for the program's effectiveness was evident when Commission IV of the Indonesian House of Representatives conducted a field visit to Mengiat Beach in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Friday, 17 July 2026. The working visit was attended by representatives from the Indonesian Quarantine Agency, local entrepreneurs, and community groups managing conservation areas to ensure the sustainability of funding and ecosystem protection.

The Deputy Chair of Commission IV of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Panggah Susanto, emphasized the importance of consistent budget allocation. He noted that sustained financial support is essential to effectively safeguard coastal ecosystems.

“Conservation, the maintenance of marine ecosystems, and budgetary support must be priorities so that the potential of coastal areas truly benefits the community,” Panggah stated while inspecting marine ecosystem management at Mengiat Beach in Nusa Dua.

The Bali Provincial Government is aligning this national conservation program with local cultural values. Head of the Bali Provincial Marine and Fisheries Agency, Putu Sumardiana, stated that sustainable marine management supports the vision of Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka Bali, which views the ocean as a vital source of life, culture, and economic vitality, including the development of signature local commodities such as traditional Balinese salt.
