RRI.CO.ID, Yogyakarta - Indonesia's Special Region of Yogyakarta designated five new Culture-Based Independent Villages in Yogyakarta on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. The policy strengthens community development through culture and green economy principles.
The newly designated villages are Banyurejo, Sriharjo, Guwosari, Petir, and Wonosari. They will integrate cultural preservation, tourism, entrepreneurship, and women's empowerment through the Special Region Fund.
Regional Secretary of Yogyakarta, Ni Made Dwipanti Indrayanti, highlighted the importance of sustainable village development. She said local wisdom and green economy should strengthen economic resilience while protecting the environment.
She explained that green economy initiatives can begin with practical community-based actions. These include sustainable farming, waste reduction, renewable energy, and responsible tourism.
"A green economy at the village level does not always have to begin with large and expensive technology. It can be realized through environmentally friendly farming, water management, small-scale renewable energy, waste reduction, circular economy, tourism based on environmental carrying capacity, and handicraft and culinary production using local materials responsibly," she said.
Made encouraged collaboration among government, communities, and stakeholders to strengthen the initiative. She said the program supports prosperous, sustainable, inclusive, and culturally rooted villages.
The Culture-Based Independent Village program has operated since 2020 across Yogyakarta. The Indonesian regional government has now designated 50 villages under the initiative.
The program combines cultural preservation, tourism, entrepreneurship, and women's economic empowerment into one development model. The government expects the approach to strengthen Indonesia's local economy while preserving cultural heritage.
