NTT Education Recovery Accelerates after Earthquake

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The recovery of education services in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) following the earthquake has continued to make positive progress, with thousands of schools and other education units resuming learning activities. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) is also accelerating assistance to repair educational facilities and provide temporary learning spaces for affected schools.

As of Monday, September 14, 2026, a total of 2,447 education units in affected areas had resumed learning activities. Of these, 487 had returned to normal classroom-based learning, while 1,960 were still using emergency arrangements, including tents, open spaces, and temporary classrooms.

Kemendikdasmen has begun distributing the first phase of revitalization assistance to 187 education units, with a total allocation of 50 billion rupiah. The assistance covers early childhood education, special education, non-formal education, and vocational high schools, while verification of needs for elementary, junior high, and senior high schools is still underway.

In addition to revitalization assistance, the government is providing 672 Temporary Classrooms (RKS) with a budget of around 3.5 billion rupiah to ensure the continuity of learning activities. Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti said the recovery was the result of cooperation among various parties to restore education services in NTT.

“Kemendikdasmen remains committed to supporting the recovery of education services in NTT so that learning activities can resume optimally and all students continue to have space to grow, learn, and pursue their aspirations,” Abdul Mu’ti said on Monday (September 14). The government has also fully distributed emergency classroom tents worth 5.5 billion rupiah to seven districts affected by the earthquake.

The recovery efforts are not limited to educational facilities but also include psychosocial support for school communities affected by the disaster. Kemendikdasmen has provided psychosocial assistance to 75 schools and plans to train 120 national facilitators and 1,700 local facilitators to support around 51,000 educators and education personnel across seven affected districts.

The government has also distributed 6 billion rupiah in initial assistance, including 10,000 food packages for children, 1,000 basic food packages, 5,500 school kits, 1,500 family kits, and 10,000 reading books. In addition, Kemendikdasmen has provided a total of 330 million rupiah in compensation to families of school community members who died or were injured in the earthquake.

The recovery is part of the government’s efforts to ensure that children’s right to education is protected even as schools continue to operate under emergency conditions. Kemendikdasmen has called on local governments and communities to continue working together so that learning activities in NTT can resume safely and optimally.
