RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL) have strengthened ties through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on Monday, September 14, at UGM’s Central Building.
The agreement paves the way for deeper collaboration in education, research, academic mobility, and human resource development. The signing was witnessed by delegations from both universities and four Timor‑Leste students currently studying at UGM.
UGM Vice Rector for Education and Teaching Wening Udasmoro highlighted the close relationship between Indonesia and Timor‑Leste as fertile ground for academic cooperation.
She noted that UGM’s 2025 visit to Timor‑Leste introduced study opportunities in Indonesia, resulting in more students pursuing degrees at UGM. “We hope to welcome more Timor‑Leste students and expand collaborative programs,” she said, as quoted on UGM's official website.
UNTL Rector Joviano António da Costa emphasized that human resource development remains a priority for Timor‑Leste’s higher education sector. Opportunities for staff and students to study abroad and build networks with partner universities are seen as crucial.
“Our first priority is to strengthen human resources, especially teaching staff, to meet evolving education standards,” he explained.
UGM’s Director of Research Mirwan Ushada welcomed the partnership, pointing to shared cultural ties and funding opportunities in Indonesia that could support joint projects.
He suggested collaboration not only in research but also in community service initiatives. “We share many cultural similarities and can leverage funding schemes to build impactful collaborations,” he said.
The MoU is expected to translate institutional closeness into concrete programs benefiting both academic communities. By fostering education, research, mobility, and capacity building, the partnership aims to strengthen institutional ties while expanding knowledge exchange between Indonesia and Timor‑Leste. ***
