RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Batak tribe is one of the largest ethnic groups in Indonesia, originating from North Sumatra Province. According to the 2010 Population Census by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the Batak people are one of the largest ethnic groups in Indonesia.

The term Batak is used as a collective name for six sub-ethnic groups, namely Batak Toba, Karo, Mandailing, Angkola, Simalungun, and Pakpak-Dairi. Each has its own language, customs, and cultural uniqueness, but they all share the same cultural roots.

The history of the Batak people is inseparable from the Lake Toba region, which has long been the center of cultural development and the life of the Batak community. To this day, the area remains a center for the preservation of customs, language, and traditions that have been passed down thru generations.

Historical records show that the Barus region on the western coast of North Sumatra has been an international trade center for centuries. Camphor and frankincense from the Batak highlands became high-value commodities traded by merchants from various regions, including India and the Middle East.

During the Dutch East Indies administration, the Batak region was under the administration of the Tapanuli Residency, which was divided into several administrative areas, namely Padang Sidempuan, Nias, Sibolga, and Bataklanden.

Entering the early 20th century, the Batak community also contributed to the struggle for Indonesia's independence. The Jong Batak organization became one of the youth associations that participated in the Youth Congress and supported the birth of the Youth Pledge in 1928 as a milestone for national unity.

Until now, Batak people are known to continue preserving their cultural heritage, from language, kinship system based on clan, traditional houses, traditional music, to the Ulos woven cloth which has become a symbol of identity and pride for the Batak community.
