RRI.CO.ID, Purwokerto - Born out of an accidental electric power surplus from a beauty salon on Jalan Suprapto No. 25 in Kebon Dalem, Purwokerto, Banyumas Regency, Central Java, in 1968, Es Brasil (Brasil Ice) has blossomed into a beloved culinary landmark and traditional buffet eatery.
Quoting the store's official website, the name Brasil originates from local slang for berhasil, meaning successful, serving as a hopeful moniker that has maintained its artisanal charm over 56 years under second and third-generation family management.
Operating through an uncompromising commitment to natural ingredients like fresh fruit, fresh coconut milk, and pure sugar cane sugar without artificial preservatives, the shop freezes treats in extreme sub-zero saltwater baths ranging from minus 15 to minus 20 degrees Celsius.
Today, Es Brasil has expanded beyond its original roots to modern urban outlets, including in Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta, while continuing its manual packaging techniques.
Patrons can enjoy Es Kotak (block ice) priced at IDR 4,000 (USD 0,22) in flavors like mung bean, black sticky rice, bread, dawet, jackfruit, coffee, young coconut, palm fruit, and Es Lilin (traditional ice pops).
Es Lilin made with coconut milk features options such as carrot, avocado, durian, cocktail, chocolate, and coffee alongside the legendary Brasil coffee produced since the business began.

The menu also features Es Puter cups (coconut-milk-based artisanal ice cream) and milk-based Ice Cream cups priced at IDR 7,000 with varieties like coconut, durian, tutty fruity, vanilla, and strawberry.
Other selections include refreshing Es Rujak made from yam, pineapple, carrot, guava, and cucumber priced at IDR 7,000 (USD 0,39), modern ice cream cones at IDR 12,000, fruit juice at IDR 8,000, and juice sticks at IDR 2,000.
Additional offerings include chocolate and rainbow sticks priced at IDR 5,000, ice bread at IDR 15,000, and ice cake at IDR 12,000 for visitors exploring the extensive menu. Beyond its frozen sweets, the establishment operates as a repository of collective memory where visitors find themselves deeply moved by the vintage atmosphere.
Reflecting on her first visit, dessert enthusiast Ratna from Yogyakarta noted that trying the treats brought back vivid memories. "It is my first time trying it, but it reminds me of my childhood and brings back a lot of nostalgia," she said, recently.
"Back then, eating ice cream could be counted on one hand in a year, which is why the taste leaves a very deep and lasting impression. As a dessert lover who often tries legendary ice creams, this is just as delicious and has its own unique character," she continued.

She praised the quality of the treats and voiced her hopes for the shop’s future. “I hope this ice cream parlor continues to thrive so that future generations can experience the flavors of the past. With so many varieties on the menu, it’s hard not to want to try them all. Personally, I loved the chocolate cone and the vanilla cup with sprinkles. They tasted amazing,” Ratna said.
Sharing her impressions of the trip, Misni from Pati, Central Java, explained that she decided to visit because the spot is legendary while traveling through Purwokerto.
“I love the atmosphere here because it feels truly nostalgic. Beyond the ice cream, the food is delicious, and the traditional market snacks are sold at very affordable prices. I came because it’s a legendary spot, and since I was traveling around Purwokerto, I really wanted to experience it,” she said.
By seamlessly blending heritage recipes, honest flavors, and welcoming community spaces, Es Brasil proves that a modest household enterprise can transform into a timeless multi-generational legacy. ***
