RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - For visitors to Indonesia, bakso, or Indonesian meatballs, is one of the local dishes worth trying. This meat-based dish comes in various styles across the country, including the widely known Bakso Solo and Bakso Malang. Although both are typically served in a warm broth, they have distinct characteristics. So, what makes Bakso Solo different from Bakso Malang?

Bakso Solo generally has a simpler presentation, with the bakso as the main component. The broth is commonly served with noodles or rice vermicelli, scallions, and fried shallots. The culinary tradition has also traveled with communities who moved from one region to another. The Malang City Government, for example, records the existence of Bakso Solo Kidul Pasar, which was founded in 1965 by Suparno, a native of Solo, in Malang.

Meanwhile, Bakso Malang is known for its wider variety of fillings and accompaniments. A bowl may include different types of bakso, tofu, siomay, pangsit, and fried bakso. The Malang City Government also notes the development of various bakso variations in the city, including vegetable bakso, which allows customers to choose their preferred noodles, vegetables, and types of bakso.

These differences in presentation create a distinct experience for diners. Bakso Solo tends to place the bakso and broth at the center of the dish, while Bakso Malang offers more options for customers to create their preferred combination in a single serving.

From a communication perspective, the journey of Bakso Solo and Bakso Malang is also interesting, as food can carry the identity of a particular region. The names “Solo” and “Malang” refer not only to geographical locations, but can also evoke the characteristics and culinary traditions that have developed in those areas.

These differences show how a type of food can develop distinct characteristics as it grows within different communities. Such changes are reflected not only in the accompanying ingredients but also in how people prepare and enjoy the dish.

This diversity is part of Indonesia’s ever-evolving culinary heritage. Bakso is not simply a widely enjoyed dish, but also part of the story of communities, cultural exchange, and flavors that have developed across different parts of the country.
