RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia possesses a rich food culture shaped by the natural, cultural, and traditional diversity of communities across the archipelago. Spanning from west to east, there are approximately 5,000 traditional recipes that reflect the varied eating habits of people in each region.

This diversity is inextricably linked to Indonesia's geography as an archipelagic and maritime nation. Comprising around 17,000 islands and a total area of approximately 1.905 million square kilometers made up of roughly 70 percent water and 30 percent land and the country's natural landscape has played a key role in shaping local food sources and dietary habits.

Geographic location is a major factor influencing the types of food people consume. Coastal communities, for instance, rely heavily on fish and seafood, whereas those in mountainous regions consume more meat, poultry, fruits, and vegetables.

Food also plays a vital role in various Indonesian traditions and customary ceremonies. According to the Indonesia Gastronomy Network, there are over 70 rituals and ceremonies in the country where food is a central element. This demonstrates that food is not merely a matter of daily sustenance but also holds significant social and cultural value.

The diversity of Indonesian food culture is further evident in the use of spices and rhizomes, as well as in dishes that are widely known across different regions. Sambal (chili sauce) and soto (traditional soup), for example, come in a multitude of variations; the narrative of Indonesian food culture records over 100 types of sambal and around 70 types of soto.

This culinary richness is also influenced by the diversity of the Indonesian people, who comprise a wide array of ethnic and cultural groups. The Indonesia Gastronomy Network notes that natural and cultural diversity plays a crucial role in shaping the story of Indonesian food, encompassing everything from local products and culinary heritage to cooking traditions passed down through generations.
