RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's shrimp export volume remained relatively stagnant in 2025, growing by only around 2 percent from the previous year, according to the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP).

Speaking at the Towards Sustainable and Conversion-free Aquaculture in Southeast Asia (TOSCA) meeting in Jakarta on Thursday, KKP Director of Brackish Water Fish Fernando Jongguran Simanjuntak said the situation poses a challenge to improving the competitiveness of the national shrimp industry.

According to Fernando, the shrimp industry continues to face several challenges, including high feed costs, disease, environmental conditions, and increasing demands for food safety and sustainability in global markets.

He said reciprocal tariff issues in 2025 also put pressure on domestic shrimp prices, which fell by nearly IDR 11,000 across size categories. Additional pressure came from concerns over cesium-137 contamination, which temporarily hampered Indonesian shrimp exports.

"The cesium issue significantly pressured shrimp prices in the domestic market because, for a period of time, almost all of our shrimp could not be exported," Fernando said.

Fernando added that the use of antibiotics remains a concern because it is linked to food safety and product quality in international markets.

To boost competitiveness, the KKP is promoting farming efficiency by developing feed from local raw materials and implementing the Aquafit 2.0 concept, which focuses on feed costs per kilogram of shrimp produced rather than the price of feed itself.

KKP data show that shrimp export volume reached 218,870 tons in 2025, up around 2 percent from 214,570 tons in 2024. However, the figure remained below the 220,880 tons recorded in 2023.

Meanwhile, shrimp exports rose to USD 1.86 billion in 2025, up from USD 1.68 billion in 2024 and USD 1.72 billion in 2023.

The United States remained Indonesia's largest shrimp export market in 2025, with export volume reaching 124,563.65 tons, or 56.9 percent of total shrimp exports. ***
