RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Several key economic data points from Indonesia are scheduled for release today. The most important is the Consumer Confidence Index for August, followed by motorcycle and car sales data.
Consumer confidence is considered crucial for financial markets because it reflects how people view current economic conditions and their expectations. The index can also provide an early indication of the economy’s potential performance.
China has also released its latest inflation data, showing a significant monthly increase. Despite this development, only Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index has so far moved lower, while most Asian stock markets are trading mixed with a slight upward bias.
Meanwhile, global crude oil prices are approaching the $100 per barrel level, reaching around $99.40 per barrel. Higher oil prices could remain a key factor for global markets, particularly for countries that depend heavily on energy imports.
In Indonesia, the Jakarta Composite Index, or IHSG, opened highly volatile this morning. The index initially rose to around 6,700 before briefly moving into negative territory.
The Indonesian rupiah, meanwhile, strengthened to around 17,555 per US dollar. The move came as the US Dollar Index weakened to around 98.7.
The Federal Reserve’s bond-buying plans could potentially encourage capital inflows into Indonesia’s financial markets. This could provide further support for the rupiah against the US dollar.
Gold prices, however, failed to benefit from the weaker US dollar. Global gold prices fell to around $4,372 per troy ounce, equivalent to roughly IDR 2.48 million per gram.
