Govt Helps Bottled Water Industry Meet Mandatory National Standards

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Ministry of Industry continues to strengthen the mandatory implementation of Indonesian National Standards (SNI) for bottled drinking water products to ensure food safety and consumer protection.

This strategic move, implemented through Ministry of Industry Regulation No. 62 of 2024, sends an important signal to the global market regarding Indonesia’s commitment to enhancing the competitiveness and quality of national industrial products.

The policy regarding quality standards for bottled drinking water products was actually enacted on October 18, 2024. Following a six-month transition period, this regulation officially took effect on April 18, 2025, to ensure that all products on the market meet safety requirements.

The government emphasizes that standardization is not merely an administrative regulation but a vital instrument for safeguarding public safety and health. Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, outlined the primary objective of implementing this policy in a ministry press release on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

“SNI is essentially a state instrument through which the government must ensure that all products entering Indonesia meet the 3K criteria: safety, health, and security. That is the essence of standardization,” he said.

To ensure business certainty, SNI Mark Usage Certificates (SPPT SNI) issued before the new regulations take effect will remain valid until the transition period ends on October 18, 2026. In implementing these measures, the Agency for Standardization and Industrial Services Policy (BSKJI) provides technical assistance and facilitates reporting through the National Industrial Information System (SIINas).

BSKJI Head Emmy Suryandari, explained that BSKJI continues to facilitate business operators to help them better understand certification regulations and industrial reporting procedures. This step is taken to ensure that every business unit can implement quality standards accurately and consistently.

“This assistance aims to ensure that policy implementation runs effectively while also improving industry players’ compliance with applicable regulations. Additionally, reporting through SIINas will strengthen the national industrial database, which serves as the foundation for formulating more targeted industrial policies,” she said.

At the regional level, the Ambon Center for Standardization and Industrial Services (BSPJI) has made testing and consultation facilities available to businesses in the Maluku region and surrounding areas. This comprehensive support is expected to encourage the local bottled drinking water industry to produce high-quality products that are safe for consumption and competitive in the international market.
