RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The leadership transition at Bank Indonesia (BI) is not necessarily seen as a threat to national economic stability. In fact, the market’s response could be positive if the new governor maintains the independence and credibility of monetary policy.

A researcher at the Economic Research Center of the Indonesian Agency for Research and Innovation (BRIN), Syahrir Ika, said the quality of Perry Warjiyo’s successor will be the key factor watched by market participants.

“If his successor has a strong track record and demonstrates independence, the market could respond positively through a stronger rupiah, lower risk premiums, and increased investor confidence,” Syahrir said in Jakarta on Monday, July 27, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

He explained that the impact of Perry’s resignation must be viewed from both financial market and economic fundamentals perspectives. The new governor will face challenges in maintaining rupiah stability, controlling inflation, attracting capital inflows, boosting productivity, and driving high-quality economic growth.

“All of these require coordination between monetary, fiscal, and real-sector policies. Therefore, the change in BI leadership is just one factor -- not the primary determining factor,” Syahrir said.

He added that the transition also opens opportunities for more adaptive policies. Key priorities include strengthening rupiah stabilization, deepening the domestic financial market, accelerating the transformation of the digital payment system, and enhancing policy coordination with the government.

“I can conclude that optimism regarding the Indonesian economy is not based solely on a change in leadership, but on the new BI governor’s ability to maintain policy credibility,” said Syahrir.

He emphasized that the market values policy continuity more than a mere change in leadership. “If the new leader can bring innovation without compromising independence, then this transition could serve as a catalyst to strengthen market confidence while improving Indonesia’s economic fundamentals,” said Syahrir. ***
