RRI.CO.ID, Banyuwangi - The 2026 edition of Gandrung Sewu is poised to redefine Banyuwangi’s cultural landscape as the signature dance festival prepares to launch a groundbreaking nighttime performance on Saturday, October 24.

Marking a major shift in the event’s 14-year history, over 1,000 traditional dancers will take the stage after dark, utilizing custom phosphor costume elements, stage lighting, and production technology to present a striking visual spectacle.

Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani noted that the new format reflects the evolving nature of cultural heritage, blending modern artistic presentation with traditional roots.

"Tradition does not have to remain static. Tradition can move, adapt, and evolve with the times without losing its identity, the core essence of Gandrung Sewu remains the Gandrung dance itself, with movements, rhythms, expressions, and cultural values passed down by our ancestors," Ipuk said on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, as quoted by Infopublik.id.

The production is supported by state-owned aviation and tourism holding company InJourney, which partnered with the local administration to enhance the festival's scale and international appeal.

InJourney SVP Corporate Secretary Yudhistira Setiawan emphasized that the expanded format aims to establish Gandrung Sewu as a premier signature cultural event for Indonesia, driving long-term economic and tourism growth across the region. ***
