Reog Ponorogo: East Java's UNESCO-Listed Cultural Icon

RRI.CO.ID, Ponorogo - Reog Ponorogo is a traditional performing art that has become a cultural icon of East Java. The performance combines dance, gamelan music, dramatic costumes, and local folklore into a distinctive spectacle.
Its most recognizable element is Dadak Merak, a giant mask featuring a tiger's face adorned with peacock feathers. The striking costume has become a defining symbol of Reog performances in Ponorogo.
UNESCO inscribed Reog Ponorogo on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list on December 3, 2024. The recognition added Reog to Indonesia's collection of cultural heritage elements acknowledged by the international organization.
Several stories describe the origins of Reog Ponorogo, although no single version is universally accepted. One widely known account connects the tradition with Ki Ageng Kutu, a Majapahit official who left the royal court.
According to this account, Reog was created as political satire criticizing the kingdom's declining leadership. The tiger mask represented the king, while the peacock feathers symbolized foreign influence within the palace.
Another version connects Reog with the Panji legend and a royal proposal challenged by a rival kingdom. The conflict between two powers forms an important part of the dramatic narrative associated with Reog.
Dadak Merak measures approximately 2.25 meters long and weighs around 50 kilograms. Dancers hold the heavy mask using their teeth and jaw, requiring extensive physical training and strength.
Other characters, including Warok, Jathil, and Bujang Ganong, contribute different roles to the performance. Warok represents wisdom and guidance, while Jathil portrays disciplined and skilled mounted warriors.
Reog remains an important part of Ponorogo's cultural identity and appears during weddings, ceremonies, and Grebeg Suro. Its distinctive performance tradition continues to introduce East Java's cultural heritage to audiences in Indonesia and abroad.
