Takpala Village: Preserving Alor's Abui Tribal Heritage in East Nusa Tenggara

RRI.CO.ID, Alor – Takpala Village is a cultural heritage destination preserving the traditions of the Abui tribe in Alor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. Located in Lembur Barat Village, North Central Alor District, the village is protected as a cultural heritage area under local regulation.

Takpala is home to one of Alor’s indigenous communities, with around 13 families continuing to live in the traditional settlement. Their daily lives remain closely connected to the customs, architecture, and cultural practices inherited from earlier generations.

The village features distinctive pyramid-shaped traditional houses covered with thatched roofs made from ilalang grass. The architecture reflects generations of Abui craftsmanship and provides a glimpse into the community’s traditional way of life.

The name Takpala also carries a symbolic meaning in the local language. “Tak” means limitless, while “Pala” means wood, creating a name associated with a symbolic boundary marker.

Visitors arriving at Takpala Village are welcomed with traditional dances performed by Abui women. Their movements accompany verses of traditional songs that have been passed down through generations as part of the community’s cultural heritage.

Groups of Abui men also take part in traditional performances featuring weapons and shields. These displays introduce visitors to another aspect of the community’s heritage while creating a lively welcome at the village.

Reaching the traditional settlement requires visitors to climb 21 stone steps leading into the village. The short climb becomes part of the experience as visitors enter an environment surrounded by traditional houses and cultural elements.

Visitors can also rent traditional clothing complete with distinctive head ornaments and bracelets for a more immersive cultural experience. Traditional Lopo houses around the village provide additional spaces where visitors can photograph the architecture and cultural setting.

Through its traditional dances, clothing, weapons, and architecture, Takpala Village continues to preserve the cultural identity of the Abui tribe. The living heritage of its small community makes Takpala an important cultural destination for travelers exploring Alor.
