Banyuwangi Showcases Endhog-Endhogan Tradition for Maulid

RRI.CO.ID, Banyuwangi - Banyuwangi showcased its Endhog-Endhogan tradition during a lively Maulid Nabi Muhammad ( the Birthday of Prophet Mohammad) celebration on Thursday, September 10, 2026. Thousands of decorated eggs were paraded three kilometers from Sabha Swagata Blambangan Pavilion to the Banyuwangi Regent's Office, East Java.

Just like the word endhog, which means egg, Endhog-Endhogan features boiled eggs arranged on decorated banana-tree trunks known locally as jodhang. The decorated displays are carried in a colorful procession using everything from traditional pedicabs to decorated bicycles.

The procession was accompanied by Islamic music, rebana drums, and chants of salawat, creating a festive atmosphere. Thousands of residents lined the route to watch the procession and collect eggs distributed by participants.

Banyuwangi Regent, Ipuk Fiestiandani joined the procession alongside local officials, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, religious organizations, and community members. The tradition also attracted foreign tourists who happened to pass through the area during their visit.

A French tourist, Roman said the traditional celebration caught his attention while traveling through Banyuwangi. He was traveling with a group for three days to explore Banyuwangi’s tourist destinations and natural scenery. “This tradition is very interesting. It is very beautiful,” Roman said.

The Endhog-Endhogan tradition has become part of Banyuwangi’s Maulid celebrations while preserving local cultural practices. The celebration also introduces visitors to a local tradition combining religious values, communal participation, and distinctive cultural elements.

“Endhog-Endhogan has become a Maulid tradition in Banyuwangi. This activity is part of preserving that tradition,” Ipuk said.

She added that the procession strengthens togetherness and teaches the value of sharing with others. A religious gathering and salawat (praying upon Prophet Mohammad) session were also held at the pavilion before the procession.
