RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Blending rustic heritage with unexpected sonic depth, Toleat stands out as a unique traditional wind instrument native to Subang Regency, West Java, capturing attention for its resemblance to a flute yet producing tones reminiscent of a saxophone or trumpet.

Crafted from bamboo, frequently utilizing the same tamiang bamboo traditionally reserved for standard flutes, the instrument features a body, tone holes, a headpiece, and a vibrating reed that serves as its primary sound source. Players generate sound by blowing directly into the mouthpiece while using their fingers to manipulate the tone holes.

Beyond basic playing methods, musicians employ intricate ornamentation techniques such as kejat, ketrok, leot, and puruluk to enrich the performance.

The historical roots of Toleat trace back to the agrarian lifestyle of the northern coastal plains of Subang, where local shepherd children originally fashioned primitive noisemakers known as empet-empetan or ole-olean from rice straw while tending livestock.

Recognizing the limitations of these temporary instruments, a local artist named Mang Parman engineered a more durable version using bamboo to introduce structured musical notes.

Over time, Toleat evolved from a solitary pastime (kalangenan) meant for personal amusement into a performance art (pintonan) capable of standing alone or blending seamlessly with both traditional and modern instruments.

This ongoing evolution has cemented its status as a vital component of Subang's cultural identity. In recognition of its cultural significance, Toleat was officially designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of West Java under Decree Number 372/M/2021. ***
