Indonesia’s Traditional Weapon Kerambit Featured in “Reacher” Season 4

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesian singers and actresses Anggun C. Sasmi and Agnez Mo have drawn attention after using the traditional kerambit weapon during action scenes in "Reacher" Season 4. The kerambit even plays such a key role that it features in the episode's title “Karambits and Pieces.”

According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism, kerambit is a traditional weapon with a curved shape resembling a tiger’s claw. Its distinctive design includes a ring on the handle, allowing users to hold the weapon firmly during close combat.

The weapon was historically associated with martial arts and was used for swift maneuvers and effective close-range attacks. Beyond self-defense, kerambit also carries cultural and historical significance within Indonesian traditional martial arts and heritage.

Kerambit later spread beyond Minangkabau, West Sumatra, through the migration of Minangkabau people across Southeast Asia centuries ago. Its use eventually reached countries including Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Thailand through regional trade networks.

Today, kerambit is not only used in martial arts but also collected as a historical and cultural artifact. Traditional blacksmiths continue producing kerambit using techniques passed down through generations, preserving signature craftsmanship and regional heritage.

The handles may feature traditional regional motifs and carvings, adding artistic value alongside the weapon's distinctive functional design. Modern versions are also produced in various forms for martial arts practice, collections, and cultural appreciation around the world.

The appearance of kerambit in "Reacher" provides an opportunity to introduce Indonesian heritage to viewers internationally. For younger generations, its appearance can also encourage greater appreciation for cultural heritage and understanding of kerambit's cultural significance.
