RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, and Qatar's Ambassador to Indonesia, Sultan bin Mubarak Saad Al-Dosari, explored opportunities to strengthen cultural cooperation ahead of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The meeting underscored the growing role of cultural diplomacy in enhancing bilateral ties.

The discussion took place at the Ministry of Culture's office in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday August 5, 2026. Both sides exchanged views on collaborative cultural programs that could mark the upcoming Golden Jubilee of Indonesia-Qatar diplomatic relations.

Opening the meeting, Fadli praised Qatar for its strong commitment to preserving and promoting its cultural heritage. He noted that the country's investment in cultural institutions has become one of its greatest national strengths.

"We admire Qatar's growing commitment to preserving and developing its culture because one of our greatest strengths lies in the power of culture. Qatar is home to remarkable cultural institutions such as the Museum of Islamic Art, the Qatar National Library, and Katara Cultural Village," Fadli said.

The minister also noted that Indonesia and Qatar established diplomatic relations in 1976 and will celebrate the 50th anniversary of those ties next year. To commemorate the milestone, both countries discussed initiatives such as a joint stamp exhibition showcasing the cultural diversity of Indonesia and Qatar.

During the meeting, Fadli introduced several artworks displayed at the Ministry of Culture, including a portrait of Syekh Yusuf Al-Makassari, a national hero of both Indonesia and South Africa. He explained that the renowned Islamic scholar spread Islamic teachings to South Africa and Sri Lanka and was later honored by former South African President Nelson Mandela as "one of Africa's greatest sons."

Ambassador Al-Dosari welcomed closer cultural collaboration and proposed involving Indonesia in celebrations for Qatar National Day through activities such as art exhibitions and orchestral performances. The initiative is expected to expand cultural exchanges and strengthen people-to-people connections between the two nations.

Concluding the meeting, Fadli called for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide a formal framework for future cultural cooperation between Indonesia and Qatar. He expressed hope that concrete collaboration would further strengthen bilateral relations, expand cultural exchanges, and reinforce cultural diplomacy on the international stage.
