RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, has expressed support for the proposal to confer the title of National Hero on Mr. Assaat in recognition of his contributions to the country's early history. He said Mr. Assaat's role in Indonesia's nation-building deserves broader historical recognition through a comprehensive academic assessment.

Fadli made the remarks during a meeting with Iqbal Assaat, the son of Mr. Assaat, at the Ministry of Culture in Jakarta on Tuesday August 4, 2026. The meeting focused on the progress of the nomination process and the steps required to support Mr. Assaat's candidacy in accordance with the official procedures.

During the meeting, Iqbal Assaat explained that the nomination process had begun several years ago but was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposal was resumed in February 2025 by the Banuhampu Family Association together with author and historian Hasril Chaniago, following the established nomination procedures.

Fadli said Mr. Assaat was one of the key figures in Indonesia's early post-independence history whose contributions deserve greater public recognition. "After all, Mr. Assaat served as President of the Republic of Indonesia during the period of the United States of Indonesia (RIS). He also played an important role in the inauguration of Gadjah Mada University in 1950," he said.

As part of the nomination process, supporting historical materials have been collected to strengthen the academic review of Mr. Assaat's legacy. These include personal letters, family archives, and historical photographs that have been submitted to the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI).

The minister emphasized that the nomination of a National Hero must be supported by rigorous historical research and credible documentary evidence. He added that the contributions of national figures should be thoroughly documented to ensure they become part of Indonesia's collective historical memory.

Fadli also expressed hope that the nomination would receive broad support from regional governments, academics, historians, and other stakeholders. He said such collaboration would help ensure that every stage of the nomination process proceeds in accordance with the applicable regulations.

Concluding the meeting, Fadli voiced optimism that the proposal for Mr. Assaat to be named a National Hero would continue to move forward through strengthened historical research and academic seminars. He said he hopes Mr. Assaat's dedication and service to Indonesia will receive the recognition they deserve through the country's highest civilian honor.
