RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia strengthened efforts to preserve the nation's historical legacy by expanding collaboration with cultural organizations to bring stories of the independence struggle to wider audiences. Minister of Culture ,Fadli Zon, discussed the initiative during a meeting with the Central Board of the Defenders of the Homeland (PETA) Foundation in Jakarta, Wednesday, 29 July 2026.

The discussion focused on strengthening historical literacy, preserving the nation's collective memory, and developing historical narratives through film. One of the main proposals was the production of films highlighting the role of PETA, a Japanese-era volunteer force whose members later became key figures in Indonesia's struggle for independence.

Fadli Zon welcomed the initiative, noting that the Ministry of Culture is currently preparing several films centered on Indonesia's fight for independence. "Following the President's direction, our productions will focus on the War of Independence rather than using the term 'revolution,' as much of Indonesia's historical narrative is rooted in the 1945–1950 period," he said.

The minister invited the PETA Foundation to collaborate in developing the screenplay to ensure historical accuracy alongside artistic quality. He emphasized that close cooperation between historians, scriptwriters, and cultural institutions is essential to producing films that are both compelling and historically credible.

PETA Foundation Chairman, Tinton Suprapto, proposed producing a film specifically portraying the organization's history between 1943 and 1945. He suggested that the story of PETA could be developed as a short film, while the life of Shodanco Soeprijadi—one of Indonesia's most prominent national heroes—could be adapted into a feature-length production.

According to him, the screenplay has already been prepared through extensive historical research by Indonesian screenwriter Jujur Prananto. The project is now entering the next phase, including selecting a director, forming the creative team, and finalizing the production budget and investment scheme.

Beyond film production, the meeting also reviewed proposals for national honors and decorations for PETA pioneers. Officials said that 16 of the 20 nominees submitted by the foundation have already received approval from the Ministry of Social Affairs and are awaiting further verification through the presidential honors process.

The Ministry of Culture said it will continue working with the PETA Foundation to finalize the film project, strengthen historical curation, and broaden public understanding of Indonesia's independence struggle. Through film and other cultural platforms, the government aims to preserve the legacy of the nation's heroes while promoting historical awareness among future generations.
