RRI.CO.ID, Wonosobo - The tradition of cutting the gimbal hair, dreadlocks or matted hair, of children in the Dieng Plateau continues to be preserved by local communities as a cultural heritage rich in spiritual values. Beyond safeguarding local wisdom, the annual ritual is also being promoted as one of the main attractions of cultural tourism in Wonosobo Regency, Central Java.
As reported by Antara, Wonosobo Cultural Figure, Nanik Widayat, said in Wonosobo on Friday, July 24, 2026, that the gimbal hair-cutting tradition is one of the region’s cultural treasures that must continue to be maintained.
According to her, in addition to its spiritual meaning and local wisdom, the tradition is also expected to become a tourist attraction that introduces Dieng culture to a wider public.
After the haircutting ritual is completed, the gimbal hair strands are then offered to the river as a symbol of releasing hopes and prayers that the children will grow up healthy, well-behaved, and free from danger.
A parent of a gimbal-haired child, Ani Puji Astuti, said Dieng residents believe that a child’s gimbal hair is a gift with a special meaning. For that reason, the hair cannot be cut arbitrarily, but must go through a customary ritual after all of the child’s requests have been fulfilled by the family.
That was also the case with her daughter, who is now 13 years old. Her gimbal hair began to grow naturally when she was one year old and is believed by the family to be part of Dieng’s community tradition.
A child who has gimbal hair, Syahdenpa, said he had already conveyed his wishes before the haircutting ceremony was carried out. He asked for two goats to raise and two bicycles to use for playing. ***
