RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia marks National Kebaya Day every July 24, following its establishment in 2023 by the country's 7th President, Joko Widodo. Head of Perempuan Berkebaya Indonesia (PBI), Rahmi Hidayati, stated that the kebaya or Indonesia’s traditional attire has been worn by women across the archipelago since ancient times as daily attire reflecting simplicity and modesty.

“Kebaya becomes special because of its modest design and widespread everyday use by past generations. It has also been worn as official attire at state ceremonies, royal events, and various cultural occasions in Indonesia, and also in the world,” Rahmi stated in an interview with RRI Voice Of Indonesia (VOI) on Thursday, July 23, 2026, ahead of National Kebaya Day.

Rahmi explained that although kebaya styles continue to evolve over time, a garment is still defined as a kebaya as long as it retains specific key characteristics. These traits serve as the defining identity that sets the kebaya apart from other attire.

“Although there are many styles, a garment is considered a kebaya only if it meets this characteristic. A front opening, like I use this, sleeves, like this, and symmetrical left and right side,” she said.

Furthermore, while the kebaya is often perceived as overly formal and firm, Rahmi encouraged the public not to hesitate to start with a simple style. She suggested pairing the kebaya with traditional Indonesian textiles such as batik, tenun (woven fabric), or lurik, while still preserving its core design.

“For a simple look, they can pair the kebaya with a long batik, tenun, or lurik skirt, all of which represent Indonesia's rich textile heritage. Most importantly, the upper garment should follow the defining characteristics of a kebaya, a front opening, sleeves, and symmetrical design,” said the PBI Chairwoman.

In addition, she urged people to dismantle the perception that wearing traditional clothing is complicated, emphasizing that the kebaya can be worn comfortably during various everyday activities.

“You can use it wherever you go. Like me, I'm going to climb the mountain. Also, I always use kebaya. It's not difficult to use kebaya. And also, you know, like batik, tenun, or whatever is a dress code with kebaya. It's okay. It's not difficult. Just try,” she said.

Rahmi expressed hope that more women in Indonesia and around the world will wear the kebaya as a way of appreciating this cultural heritage. She believes this will strengthen efforts to preserve the kebaya while introducing it to the international community.
