RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Culture Fadli Zon received members of the family of W.R. Soepratman, the composer of Indonesia’s national anthem "Indonesia Raya," at the Ministry of Culture office in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday, 22 June 2026. The meeting focused on strategic efforts to preserve the historical legacy of the national hero and strengthen public awareness of his contributions.

During the discussion, both sides explored initiatives to conserve sites associated with W.R. Soepratman and promote historical awareness among younger generations. The meeting also addressed the importance of preserving historical records related to the life of the renowned composer.

Fadli said W.R. Soepratman played a significant role in Indonesia’s struggle for independence and remains an important figure in the nation’s history. He noted that Soepratman’s life story offers valuable lessons for young Indonesians through his nationalism, creativity, and dedication to the independence movement.

“Over the past two years, the Ministry of Culture has organized several activities aimed at bringing younger generations closer to the history of national heroes. Last year, for example, we held a letter-writing competition dedicated to national heroes during National Heroes Day and also featured performances of songs composed by W.R. Soepratman at the National Awakening Museum,” Fadli said.

The minister also expressed support for efforts to clarify historical accounts related to Soepratman’s biography. He said a comprehensive book based on family genealogy and oral histories could help address inconsistencies surrounding the national hero’s personal history.

“Not only through a book, but we can also honor his legacy by restoring W.R. Soepratman’s grave, adding monuments, and naming major roads in the capital after him,” he said. According to Fadli, such initiatives would help ensure that future generations remain connected to Indonesia’s historical figures.

Representing the Soepratman family, Agustiani H.S. emphasized the importance of educating younger generations about national heroes, particularly W.R. Soepratman. She said efforts to correct and document historical narratives are essential to improving public literacy and understanding of Indonesia’s past.

Concluding the meeting, Fadli reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preserving Indonesia’s cultural and historical heritage through inclusive policymaking. He expressed hope that more programs and initiatives would be developed to strengthen public appreciation of W.R. Soepratman’s contributions and Indonesia’s national history.
