RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia will participate in the 54th International Theatre Festival at La Biennale in Venezia 2026 through independent producer Bumi Purnati Indonesia, presenting two performances inspired by Malay cultural traditions. The two productions to be staged at the prestigious festival in Italy are “Under the Volcano” and “Hikayat Perahu/The Tale of Boat.”

Speaking at a media briefing in Jakarta on Thursday, Artistic Director of Bumi Purnati Indonesia, Restu Kusumaningrum, said Indonesia would involve around 20 artists in the two productions.

“This production is not easy because we intentionally brought actors from West Sumatra and musicians from Aceh. We are highlighting ancient Malay culture as a major root of Indonesian culture that continues to serve as our foundation,” she said.

Restu explained ,“Under the Volcano” is directed by Yusril Katil and inspired by the poem “Lampung Karam” by Muhammad Saleh. Meanwhile, “Hikayat Perahu/The Tale of Boat” is directed by Sri Qadariatin and based on an interpretation of “Syair Perahu” by poet Hamzah Fansuri. Restu explained that “Under the Volcano” has been produced since 2014, while “Hikayat Perahu/The Tale of Boat” will hold its world premiere in Venice.

On the same occasion, Director of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Jakarta, Michele Cavallaro, said Indonesia’s participation in the Biennale Teatro carries significant importance in Indonesia-Italy cultural relations.

“We are proud that Indonesia is participating in this year’s Biennale Theatre. The presence of these two Indonesian productions is very important because the Biennale is a major stage to showcase Indonesia’s performing arts traditions to the world,” Michele said.

Michele also mentioned the Biennale is one of Italy’s most important cultural institutions and an international arts platform. He added that his institution is currently preparing several cultural collaboration projects with Bumi Purnati Indonesia as part of efforts to strengthen cultural ties between the two countries.

The 54th International Theatre Festival will feature around 200 artists from around the world in 55 events, including 10 world premieres, two European premieres, and four Italian premieres. In addition to live performances in Venice, several Biennale programs will also be broadcast online through digital platforms and the official La Biennale on Air podcast.
