RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Pamonte dance is a traditional dance from Central Sulawesi, originating with the Kaili tribe. It depicts the activity of harvesting rice and is imbued with the meaning of togetherness.

The word "Pamonte" comes from the Kaili language and means "to reap rice." This meaning is reflected in every movement performed by the dancers.

Central Sulawesi artist Hasan M. Bahasyua created the Pamonte dance around 1957. It is inspired by the life of the local agrarian community.

In performances, the dance is usually performed by female dancers. They wear traditional farmers' attire, complete with a hat as the main prop. The movements of the Pamonte dance depict the stages of harvesting rice, from picking to sifting. All movements are accompanied by music and lyrics.

The number of dancers in a performance is usually an odd number, such as nine or thirteen. This is believed to enhance the beauty and unity of the movements.

Initially, the Pamonte dance was performed as an expression of gratitude for the harvest. Over time, it also became a form of folk entertainment, often performed at traditional ceremonies, cultural festivals, and to welcome important guests.
