RRI.CO.ID, Sleman - The legacy of Indonesia’s independence struggle was honored once again on Sunday, October 4, 2026, as family members, veterans, and community representatives gathered in Sleman, Yogyakarta, for a ceremonial bamboo spear installation at the grave of late independence veteran Soegito.
The ceremony was held to recognize Soegito’s service as a member of the Indonesian Veterans Legion (LVRI) and as a veteran of the Indonesian War of Independence. The bamboo spear serves as an official symbol of remembrance for veterans who are buried outside a heroes' cemetery (TMP), while still receiving state recognition for their contributions to the nation.
The event was conducted in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 103/1957 on LVRI, Law No. 15/2012 on Indonesian Veterans, and Ministry of Defense Regulation No. 37/2014 on the burial of LVRI members.

During the ceremony, officiating inspector M. Yusuf, who also serves as chairman of the Sub-Branch Headquarters (Maran) of LVRI 03 Semarang, Central Java, paid tribute to the late veteran's dedication to Indonesia's independence.
“On this noble occasion, allow us, on behalf of the state, the nation, and the Indonesian Veterans Legions, to offer prayers that all of the late veteran’s shortcomings may be forgiven and that his soul may receive the best place beside Almighty God," Yusuf said in his remark.
"He was a source of pride for the Legion of Indonesian Veterans and for his family. Let us continue his ideals and his struggle,” he added.
Chairman of organizing committee, Heri Perwiro Utomo, said Soegito was born in 1927 and passed away in May 2019. Although eligible for burial in a heroes' cemetery, his family chose to have him laid to rest in Jembangan Hamlet, Tirtoadi Village, Mlati Subdistrict, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta.
Heri explained that the bamboo spear marker is awarded to recognized veterans who are buried in public cemeteries rather than state military cemeteries.
“He was a member of LVRI Branch 03 Semarang. The family wished for him to be buried in Yogyakarta rather than at a heroes' cemetery. Therefore, in accordance with Ministry of Defense Regulation No. 37/2014, the bamboo spear was installed as a symbol of his status as an Indonesian veteran,” Heri explained.

He added that the practice helps preserve public recognition of the role played by independence fighters in securing and defending Indonesia’s sovereignty.
"Based on all existing regulations and verification procedures, if a freedom fighter is identified anywhere in Indonesia and is not buried in a heroes' cemetery, a bamboo spear marker can be installed at the grave, provided there are valid documents and proof confirming that the individual was indeed an independence fighter," Heri concluded.
The ceremony not only commemorated Soegito’s individual contribution but also served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans across the country, whose efforts helped secure Indonesia’s independence and whose legacy continues to be honored by future generations. ***
