RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Jakarta is positioning itself to become a premier fashion hub in Asia, leveraging a surge in regional shopping tourism and growing online endorsement from international trendsetters.

Deputy Tourism Minister Ni Luh Puspa highlighted the city’s potential at the Jakarta International Investment, Trade, Tourism, and SMEs Expo (JITEX) 2026, pointing to a noticeable trend of visitors from neighboring countries traveling to the capital specifically for retail and lifestyle experiences.

"We must continue to push Jakarta as a fashion hub because I see many Malaysian influencers reviewing their visits to Jakarta for fashion and culinary shopping," Puspa said at the JIExpo Kemayoran venue on Thursday, September 17, as quoted by Antara.

While traditional destinations like Bali capture the leisure market, Jakarta’s unique appeal lies in combining high-volume commercial trade, urban lifestyle, and a thriving creative economy. The Ministry of Tourism views fashion as a primary catalyst to elevate the capital beyond its traditional reputation as a purely corporate and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) destination.

Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded 8.84 million domestic tourist trips to Jakarta in July 2026 alone, a 2.72 percent increase from the previous month, alongside a star-rated hotel occupancy rate of 58.28 percent, reflecting a robust baseline for retail-driven tourism growth.

"The challenge is how we improve the quality of experience, length of stay, and visitor spending in Jakarta. Experience is key. This is our shared task, and we remain ready to support and collaborate," Puspa explained.

To transform the city into a regional fashion destination, officials are focusing on building sustainable commercial ecosystems that connect local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with international markets. Ni Luh emphasized that trade events like JITEX 2026 play a critical role in facilitating cross-border partnerships and securing foreign investment for local fashion and textile industries.

"Ultimately, the spirit of 'Ignite the Economy' is not just about igniting economic activity today, but about building an ecosystem that allows the economy to continue growing, remaining sustainable, and providing increasingly broad benefits," Puspa said. ***
