Kuwait Provides Homes, Safer Future for Disaster Survivors in Palu

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - A gesture of solidarity from Kuwait has brought new hope to survivors of Palu’s 2018 earthquake, tsunami, and liquefaction, as 250 permanent housing units were officially handed over to families in need.

The Palu City Administration in Central Sulawesi has expressed deep appreciation to the Government of Kuwait for building 125 permanent housing units in the city for survivors of the 2018 earthquake, tsunami, and liquefaction.

“Families must be truly grateful for the assistance from the Government of Kuwait. We, the Palu City Administration, highly value the support provided to our community,” said Palu Deputy Mayor Imelda Liliana Muhidin during the inauguration of Kuwait Village in Palu on Sunday, September 13, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

She noted that the aid was especially meaningful for residents who previously lacked permanent homes, as Kuwait’s contribution included both land and housing.

Kuwait constructed 125 houses in Pengawu Village, South Palu District, and another 125 units in Doda Village, Kinovaro District, Sigi Regency. Each home is a type-42 building with two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, bathroom, and clean water facilities.

According to the deputy mayor, the housing provides a dignified living space for residents who lost their homes or had been renting since the 2018 disaster. “Alhamdulillah, they no longer face the heat and rain without shelter. They now have better homes,” she said.

Most residents of Kuwait Village are survivors from Balaroa in Palu, as well as families from Sigi and Donggala. Imelda encouraged beneficiaries to care for their homes and surroundings, foster community spirit, and use available land for daily needs such as planting tomatoes and chilies.

She also highlighted the growth of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the area, urging continued development to strengthen local economic independence. “This community can be well organized, with trees, gardens, playgrounds, and open spaces for residents to gather,” she added.

Imelda expressed hope that Kuwait Village would evolve into a comfortable, productive neighborhood with strong social interaction. She thanked Kuwait for its generosity and reminded residents to maintain cleanliness and treat their new homes with care.

Meanwhile, Kuwait government representative Abdullah said the housing project reflects Kuwait’s concern for disaster-affected communities in Palu and surrounding areas. “We are grateful for the opportunity to be in Indonesia, especially in Palu, and to provide assistance to the people,” he said.

He expressed hope that the homes would be well maintained and offer a safer, more comfortable life for the families who received them. ***
