Mount Bromo Access via Jemplang Closed Due to Savanna Fire

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) Center has closed access to Mount Bromo in East Java via Jemplang following a fire in the Pengol Savanna. The closure took effect on Thursday, September 10, 2026, to support firefighting efforts and ensure visitor safety.

Head of the TNBTS Center, Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, said the closure would remain in place while firefighting and other response efforts were underway. Coordination with a joint team was continuing to assess the safety conditions in the affected area before tourism access could be reopened.

“To ensure the smooth implementation of response and firefighting efforts, and in consideration of visitor safety, access through Jemplang has been closed to visitors. The closure has no fixed end date, as officers are still conducting regular field evaluations of the conditions in the area affected by the fire,” he said on Friday, September 11, 2026.

He explained that tourists could still enter the Bromo area through the Cemorolawang entrance in Probolinggo and Wonokitri in Pasuruan Regency. However, visitors would only be allowed to travel as far as the Sea of Sand, as the Watangan Valley Savanna area remained temporarily closed to the public.

“Access to the fire-affected site is reserved exclusively for officers, partners, and volunteers involved in the response and firefighting efforts,” he said.

He said the restriction had been imposed to ensure that the firefighting operation could proceed safely without disrupting the work of officers and volunteers in the field.

The TNBTS Center confirmed that the Malang–Lumajang transport route through Poncokusumo and Senduro remained open to local residents every day. Motorists could continue using the route, while access from Jemplang to the affected area remained closed until conditions were declared safe.

The policy was implemented to protect tourists while allowing officers sufficient space to carry out the firefighting operation as effectively as possible. The TNBTS Center will evaluate the situation with the joint team before deciding whether to reopen tourism access through Jemplang. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
