Volcanic Ash from Anak Krakatau Prompts Remote Learning in Jakarta, Banten & Bogor

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Following the widespread dispersal of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait, the Jakarta Province, Bogor Regency (West Java), and Banten Province Administration have simultaneously implemented Remote Distance Learning (PJJ) starting Monday, September 7, 2026. The emergency measure aims to safeguard students’ health and safety from exposure to volcanic ash while ensuring that teaching and learning continue uninterrupted.
For schoolchildren, the shift from classroom-based instruction to home-based learning has brought a different experience. Students continue their lessons, but this time without having to leave home or face air conditions considered potentially hazardous.
In North Jakarta, PJJ has allowed children to attend classes from the more comfortable environment of their neighborhoods. With parental supervision, learning activities proceed in line with school directives.
Fadhli, a student at State Junior High School 84 in North Jakarta, remained enthusiastic about participating in PJJ under the monitoring of his teachers and parents at home. “If this is the best option, then we’ll keep studying even if it’s from home,” he said in Jakarta on Monday, September 7, 2026.
According to Fadhli, current conditions make it impractical to go to school, as nearly all areas of Jakarta have been affected by volcanic ash.
Meanwhile, Head of the Jakarta Provincial Education Agency, Nahdiana, emphasized that the implementation of PJJ does not mean educational activities have been halted. Learning continues, adjusted to the conditions and needs of each student.
“We want to ensure that children continue learning in a safe and comfortable environment. That is why, for the time being, instruction is being conducted from home,” she said in Jakarta on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
The policy also provides an opportunity for parents to more closely accompany their children’s learning activities. Amid air-quality concerns, families can ensure that children remain indoors while obtaining learning information from official sources.
Beyond Jakarta, the Bogor Regency Administration has also shifted from face-to-face classes to PJJ system as a precautionary measure. The policy applies on September 7–8, 2026, across all levels of formal and non-formal education, both public and private.
Bogor Regent, Rudy Susmanto, said the decision was made with students’ health in mind. He noted that restricting outdoor activities is necessary to reduce the likelihood of volcanic ash exposure, while learning must continue.
“To reduce the risk of health impacts from volcanic ash on students, and following directions from West Java Governor, Dedi Mulyadi, we are implementing PJJ for two days, on September 7–8, 2026,” said Rudy on Sunday.
During the PJJ period, the education process remains directed at meeting students’ learning needs. The material provided not only addresses academic achievement but also continues to focus on character development and maintaining students’ motivation to engage in learning from home.
The Banten Provincial Administration has also imposed PJJ for three days, applicable to public and private senior high schools (SMA), vocational schools (SMK), and special education schools from September 7–9, 2026.
“One of the measures we are taking under the current conditions is to implement PJJ for all educational levels in Banten Province, and we have also coordinated with city and regency administrations,” said Banten Governor, Andra Soni, on Monday.
Governor Andra Soni announced the policy after conducting observations at the Mount Anak Krakatau Volcano Observation Post in Pasauran Village, Cinangka Subdistrict, Serang Regency on Sunday.
